Top 5 Games to Appear at Comic Con

Top 5 Games to Appear at Comic Con

Every year, Comic Con loses a bit of its comic book roots and cedes floor space to purveyors of other nerdy impulses. Video games, in particular, have taken firm footing on the show floor in San Diego, regardless of whether there's a connection to the comic world.

Consider, for example, how Will Wright gave the first-day keynote at Comic Con 2008. The link between comics and Wright's highly-anticipated game, Spore, was its ability to create comic books based on content from the game. As Joystiq noted, Wright only dedicated a few minutes to this feature before moving on to an elaborate game demonstration. It was kind of like briefly discussing business at lunch to justify expensing the bill.

Hardcore comic buffs are undoubtedly lamenting the changes to Comic Con, but the shift to a celebration of all things geek isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'll risk the stereotype and say there must be a lot of comic book fans who would love trying upcoming video games before the rest of the world

This year, more than 20 video game publishers are listed as exhibitors. For gamers everywhere, here's what to look for:

Left 4 Dead 2

There's no connection between this zombie-slaying shooter and comics, but Electronic Arts is nonetheless using Comic Con to introduce Left 4 Dead 2 to the public. The game, which forces players to cooperate in order to survive a zombie apocalypse, will be playable off-site, at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Hotel, allowing anyone who's not totally into the comic book thing to get a quick gaming fix.

Iron Man 2

Let's pray for a miracle and hope Sega's Iron Man 2 doesn't join the ranks of terrible movie-based games. We know little about the sequel to last year's warmly-met tie-in, but Sega is promising "an all-new original story and a great interactive experience." At least its comic book roots are strong.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Ultimate All-Stars

What, never heard of it? That's what a nerd convention is all about -- bringing together players who are super-competitive in a video game that's totally off the radar. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is a fighting game, like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, that made it big in Japan and is scheduled for a U.S. release in the winter. At Comic Con, players will be able to do battle in this game and others in Capcom's 400-square foot boxing ring arena.

Brutal Legend

To hype the metal-inspired action adventure game in which Jack Black voices the lead, Electronic Arts is hosting a "Metal Meltdown" concert for fans chosen by lottery. The headliner is Gwar, whom you either recall as a favorite act of Beavis & Butthead or the gaudiest metal band ever.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2

We've got to hand it to Activision for staying true to comic book fans with its presence at the convention. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is a beat-'em-up starring characters created by the legendary Stan Lee, and it's said that he'll even have a cameo in the game. At the convention, Activision will let fans try the game ahead of its fall release date, and Lee will be on hand for an hour to sign autographs. If that doesn't keep both gamers and comic buffs happy, nothing will.

Counter-Strike

Counter-Strike (commonly abbreviated to CS) is a tactical first-person shooter video game which originated from a Half-Life modification by Minh "Goose man" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe. The game has been expanded into a series since its original release, which currently includes Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Anthology and Counter-Strike on Xbox. Counter-Strike pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won by either completing the mission objective or eliminating the opposing force.

As of February 2008, Counter-Strike Online is only available in South Korea and is now in open beta test. GamePlan

Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter in which players join either the terrorist or counter-terrorist team (or becomes a spectator). Each team attempts to complete their mission objective and/or eliminate the opposing team. Each round starts with the two teams spawning simultaneously, usually at opposite ends of the map from each other. A player can choose to play as one of eight different default character models (four for each side, although Counter-Strike: Condition Zero added two extra models, bringing the total to ten). Players are generally given a few seconds before the round begins (known as "freeze time") to prepare and buy equipment, during which they cannot attack or walk/move (a player can still take damage, having the player drop from a certain height during freeze time was the only way somebody could control the players starting "HP"). They can return to the buy area within a set amount of time to buy more equipment (some custom maps included neutral "buy zones" that could be used by both teams). Once the round has ended, surviving players retain their equipment for use in the next round; players who were killed begin the next round with the basic default starting equipment.

Standard monetary bonuses are awarded for winning a round, losing a round, killing an enemy, being the first to instruct a hostage to follow, rescuing a hostage or planting the bomb.

The scoreboard displays team scores in addition to statistics for each player: name, kills, deaths, and ping (in milliseconds). The scoreboard also indicates whether a player is dead, carrying the bomb (on bomb maps), or is the VIP (on assassination maps), although information on players on the opposing team is hidden from a player until his/her death, as this information can be important.

Killed players become "spectators" for the duration of the round; they cannot change their names until they spawn (come alive) again, text chat cannot be sent to or received from live players; and voice chat can only be received from live players and not sent to them (unless the cvar sv_all talk is set to 1). Spectators are generally able to watch the rest of the round from multiple selectable views, although some servers disable some of these views to prevent dead players from relaying information about living players to their teammates through alternative media (most notably voice in the case of Internet cafes and Voice over IP programs such as team speak or Ventrilo). This technique is known as "ghosting".

Quake III Arena

Quake III Arena or Quake 3, abbreviated as Q3A or Q3, is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer and video game released on December 2, 1999. The game was developed by id Software and featured music composed by Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly. Quake III Arena is the third in the series and differs from previous games in the series by excluding a traditional single-player element and focusing on multi-player action. The single-player is instead played against computer controlled bots in a similar style to Unreal Tournament.

Q3A's aim is to frag (kill) enemy players and score points based on the game mode's objective such as capturing the enemy flag. When a player's health points reach zero, that player's avatar is fragged; in the majority of modes the player can then respawn and continue playing, health restored, but without previously gathered weapons and power-ups. Games end when a player or team reaches a score or time-limit. Game modes include deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and tournament.

Notable features of Quake 3 include the minimalist design, lacking rarely used items and features, the extensive customizability of player settings such as field of view, texture detail and enemy model, and advanced movement features such as strafe-jumping that give more speed with greater skill in contrast to the digital, all or nothing design of many computer games.
It focused on team gameplay through new game modes and new weapons, items, and player models.Team Arena was, however, criticized as its additions were long overdue and had already been implemented by fan modifications. A few years later Quake III: Gold was released, including the original Quake III Arena and the Team Arena expansion packs bundled together.

Project IGI

Description ::-

In this sequel to the award-winning Project IGI: I’m Going In, players assume the role of British covert operative David Jones, a former SAS soldier now working for the secret U.S. military organization codenamed ‘IGI’. IGI 2 boasts an action-packed single player campaign, featuring enhanced AI, a diverse range of weapon types and a newly implemented save system. Additionally, IGI 2 will offer intense team based multiplayer action. With an immersive storyline spanning across China, Russia and Libya, IGI 2 delivers a thinking-gamer’s first-person shooter. Each action packed mission expands the plot and is driven forward with impressive animated cut scenes that continue to absorb the player in the game’s carefully constructed narrative.

Project I.G.I.: I'm Going In is a tactical first-person shooter developed by Innerloop Studios and released on December 15, 2000 by Eidos Interactive. It is one of the first computer games to feature realistic weaponry and tactical combat situations. Upon release the game garnered mixed reviews due to a number of shortcomings, such as poorly programmed A.I., lack of a mid-game save option, and the lack of multiplayer features.

STORY::-

The game's protagonist, David Jones, was sent to the Carpathian mountains in Russia to recover a set of EMP chips stolen by a group of Russian mafiosa from a high-tech US facility. After infiltrating the weather station in the mountains and retrieving one of the EMP chips, his mission director, commands him to go to retrieve the remaining EMP chips so that the IGI researchers can launch a full research on the chips to determine their real usage towards the thieves.

Unfortunately, David Jones was betrayed by both his pilot and his mission director, who were part of the betrayal, after retrieving all the chips in different locations in Russia. Forced to jump down from the helicopter, he eventually survives the deadly fall and lands at the borders of Romania, where he is desperate to escape from the incoming border patrols. Meanwhile, both his former pilot and his mission director have escaped and the IGI could not detect their whereabouts after the incident, but spent enough efforts to get an important detail that David's former mission director had made several weapons and military deals with Jach Proboi in Libya, much to David's disgust, as Priboi wasn't really a good friend to David. However, under Anya, his new mission director's guide, he sets off to Libya himself and searches for the middle-aged Priboi, who had been locked up by the Libyan Intelligence for unstated purposes.

After rescuing Priboi and escaping out of the Libyan prison, Priboi states that all the information which David needs are in a safe in his villa, which was being used as a command center by the ruthless Libyan general, Major Zaleb Said. David then decides to go to the [villa] to get the papers. Surprisingly, after going through a lot of efforts and gunfights, Priboi discovers that Major Said had taken his papers and vows angrily to take them back. He suggests David to take control of the chopper in his airbase not far away from the villa in order to confront Major Said. They indeed got the chopper without much haste, and manage to gun Major Said down amidst the confusion and also get the papers back. Upon returning to his villa, Priboi tells David that the trade that he made with David's former missions director was in a seaport in Egypt.

David sets off to the port without hesitation, and managed to discover that his pilot and former mission director were actually cooperating with some country to operate the chips. David kills his pilot in the seaport, then takes a seaplane there and ventures off to the islands near China, where Anya states to be running suspicious activities throughout the time. What Anya said was quite true; David found his mission director cooperating in secrecy with a Chinese general, whom he found out later to be General Wu Xing, who plans to use the chips to blindfold US intelligence and cripple the powers within.

After some chaos and confusion, David tracks the entire plan location to a large and closely-guarded rocket launch pad, where Anya asks him to disable the system immediately before the launch is made and causes an international incident. With efforts, David then succeeds in preventing the rocket from heading towards its programmed destination and to detonate somewhere safe. Finally, he prevents a major disaster from occurring, and the world is once again safe and sound.
